Yes, we pierce minors here however there are some important things you need to know: We CANNOT pierce anyone without a parent or guardian present and they MUST bring your birth certificate and their ID. NY state law prevents us from piercing anything other than ear lobes on a minor under 13 years old.
The youngest age we pierce in our studio is 5.
Yes, they do hurt a little bit. Most of it depends on where you get the piercing (cartilage vs skin, part of the body), the gauge you're getting (20g is thinner compared to 16g or 14g but most piercings require a certain gauge for stability), and your own pain tolerance. Just keep in mind piercings are quick so the pain only lasts a second.
The healing time for a piercing varies depending on the individual and the location. Generally, ear lobes, septums, lips, dermals, and eyebrows take about 3-4 months to heal. Navels, nostrils, cartilage ear piercings, and nipples take 6-9 months to heal. Dimples, dahlias, and cheeks take a year or more. There are a lot of factors that go into healing as well: your general health, certain medications, how many piercings you've recently gotten, and age all factor in. Healing a piercing may look easy but your body has to work hard to heal around your jewelry.
We will give you specific instructions before you leave but some general tips are: only use saline to clean them. Soap, and other things like oils, and contact lens solution are incredibly irritating and drying to new piercings so don't use them! Don't twist, turn, or play with your new piercings. Doing so prolongs the healing process and can cause irritation bumps. Don't sleep on them. Sleeping on your healing piercings can compress them and change the angle at which they heal, often causing irritation bumps. Never use an aspirin paste. No matter what your friends say, and I cannot stress this enough, do not ever use an aspirin paste on any piercings or bumps. You can cause severe chemical burns to your skin requiring surgery to repair. Do not change your jewelry before your piercing is fully healed. We encourage you to come in during healing to downsize your bars to avoid bumps caused by snagging and moving piercings, however, changing your jewelry to heavy, dangly, or subpar metals before your piercing is healed can cause a host of problems not limited to: rejection, metal allergies, irritation bumps, and general trauma. Think of your healing piercing like baking bread: the outside might look and feel baked but the inside is still cooking!
We do not do any horizontal tongue or lip piercings. Snake eye and frog eyes, while neat looking, cause gum erosion, tooth damage, and can cause nerve damage in your tongue. Horizontal lip piercings tend to migrate or reject fairly quickly.
We don't pierce smileys or the tongue frenulum, or web. They reject or migrate out fairly quickly and can cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums.
We also don't do genital piercings below the waist. That's just personal choice but we can recommend other piercers in the area that do!
Yes, you can bring your family to our studio but there are some things you need to understand: while we are "family friendly" that doesn't mean we are child proof. We have breakable items, glass displays, and decorations that can be fragile in nature. Our studio is not meant for children to run around and play in. There must ALWAYS be someone to watch the kids if a parent is getting pierced! I cannot stress this enough, a piercing studio is not a park or your house, it is a business, and you WILL be asked to leave if there's craziness. It is NOT our responsibility to watch anyone's children.
We love walk ins! We are generally happy to take them Wednesday-Friday 11am-1pm, 2:30pm-5:30pm and Saturdays 11am-1pm, 2:30pm-4:30pm. We take a lunch every day at 1:30pm-2:30pm and are unavailable. We do prioritize appointments first as they have a deposit for their time so there is always the possibility of a wait. Saturdays are our busiest days and evenings are the busiest times so keep that in mind if you decide you NEED that piercing rightnowthisverysecond! If things are super busy and we cannot possibly fit you in we will let you know that another time would be better.
Founded in 2019, Distortion Piercings was born out of a passion for safe, affordable piercings. Our founder, Janet, a skilled piercer with over 6 years of experience, wanted to create a studio that is based on quality and creativity, with a focus on client comfort through the process.
Aubrey, Janet's oldest daughter, joined the team in 2022 as an apprentice and is an integral part of the continuous development of the studio.
At Distortion Piercings, we believe that piercings are more than just a little sparkle - they are a form of self-expression and individuality. That's why we work closely with each customer for placements that truly reflect their personality and style.
We follow strict sterilization protocols to ensure the safety of our clients. Our studio is clean and welcoming, and our artists are trained in all aspects of safety and hygiene.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours. We love walk ins Wednesday - Friday 11-1pm, 2:30-5:30 and Saturday 11-1pm, 2:30-4:30! We do take lunch from 1:30-2:30pm.
